6 FUN FACTS ABOUT THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY

The famous motorcycle rally in Sturgis is on the horizon and approaching fast. This August the rally will be celebrating its 75th anniversary, and we can't wait to take part in the action!
In anticipation for our wild adventures in Sturgis this year, here are 6 facts you may not have known about the motorcycle rally:

1.The rally was founded by Pappy Hoel and held by his motorcycle club, the Jackpine Gypsies, in 1938. The first rally was very small and featured only one racing event.

2.It has been held every year since 1938 with the exception of two years during World War II. Setbacks like gasoline rationing caused these off years.

3.Since its beginning, thousands of road warriors, free spirits and motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world have gathered for this legendary event.
Every year the event brings thousands of people to the small town of Sturgis, whose population is only 6,627. The highest attendance record was set in the year 2015 when over 1 million bikers united at the rally.

4.Some find love amidst the craziness — marriages often take place at Sturgis during the rally! In fact, the year 2015 also set the high record for marriage licenses issued: 297.

5.Bikers make a strong impact on the community during the rally: over $800 million is brought to Sturgis annually.

6.Classic Sturgis bike routes give participants opportunities to see some of the coolest sites the Midwest has to offer, including Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Bear Butte State Park, Badlands National Park and Devil's Tower National Monument.
